Until 2016 the recording of the cemetery records of grave purchases was the same as it was in 1856 when Oconee Hill Cemetery was started. Unfortunately in 1897 every record was destroyed. Although that history is lost, the trustees have dedicated the resources to preserve these historic records by having the Sexton’s books digitized so they can be removed and stored permanently in a secure, archival location.
Now the history and records of thousands who call Oconee Hill Cemetery their permanent home will never will be lost. They are now available on this special archive website for all to enjoy. Whether you are searching for a friend, or relative residing here or just doing historical research, you should be able to find their name listed here. So explore any of the thousands of grave sites of Athenians that include many governors, statesmen, college presidents, coaches, rock stars, and also those lost in youth or those lost in battle.
You also will be able to query historian Charlotte Thomas Marshall about any and all our residents and she will share with you directly her vast knowledge of the cemetery that she has acquired after five decades of study and documentation.
We offer you photos of most of the actual tombstones, diagrams of the lots where there are multiple graves, an historical view of the personal family interments that traces the lineage back over the decades.
You can also view our ongoing virtual tour conducted by Mrs. Marshall. This growing anthology will soon include customized personal family biographies available through a donation to the Cemetery to cover the production costs. We welcome your feedback and observations, suggestions and corrections if you see any changes or additions needed.
